Description
Archaeologist Andrew Westman investigates public buildings in London which, in their day, were quite new types of building open to the public – underground railway stations, poor men's hostels, police courts, pubs and a circus-theatre-cinema. Planning permission required that a record of these buildings be made before they were demolished or converted to new uses, even though they were not necessarily listed buildings. These buildings can tell us a great deal about how London grew and became the modern city we know. Andrew has worked for the Museum since 1981 and has been investigating and recording standing buildings for some years.
